Family Medical Leave Act
Generally, the types of events that trigger FMLA protection include:

The arrival of a new child whether by birth, adoption or foster.

The care of a family member with a serious health condition.

The employee's own serious health condition that prevents the employee from performing the essential job duties.

FMLA is generally non paid time off unless you use PTO or have short/long term disability insurance, the purpose of FMLA is protect your employment status up to 12 weeks with a qualifying occurrence.

Entitles employees to take time off from work up to 12 weeks due to a family or self medical occurrence but only for specified reasons. Not every reason qualifies for FMLA protection.
