Family Medical Leave Act

Generally, the types of events that trigger FMLA protection include:

  • The arrival of a new child whether by birth, adoption or foster.

  • The care of a family member with a serious health condition.

  • The employee's own serious health condition that prevents the employee from performing the essential job duties.

  • FMLA is generally non paid time off unless you use PTO or have short/long term disability insurance, the purpose of FMLA is protect your employment status up to 12 weeks with a qualifying occurrence.

FMLA

  • Entitles employees to take time off from work up to 12 weeks due to a family or self medical occurrence but only for specified reasons. Not every reason qualifies for FMLA protection.
